This page answers some of the most common questions sailors at Waukegan Marina ask when they are thinking about trying sailboat racing with Anchorage Yacht Club. Our goal is to make racing approachable, fun, and welcoming for everyone.
No. Many of our racers began with little or no racing experience. Our members are always happy to help new sailors learn the basics and get comfortable with the process.
No. Most cruising sailboats at Waukegan Marina can participate in our races. Anchorage Yacht Club uses the PHRF handicap system so different types of boats can compete fairly.
Not at all. Many boats race with just two or three people aboard. Some skippers even race single‑handed. You can sail with as many or as few crew as you feel comfortable with.
Most boats can race with the equipment they already have onboard. Basic sails, navigation lights, and normal sailing gear are usually all that is required.
Everyone makes mistakes, especially when they first start racing. The goal of your first races is simply to learn and enjoy the experience.
Our races are competitive but friendly. Some sailors enjoy racing very competitively, while others participate just for the fun of sailing with other boats.
Experienced Anchorage Yacht Club members are always willing to help new racers understand starting procedures, course navigation, and the basic racing rules.
Safety is always a priority. Our races are conducted close to shore and within a structured race committee environment.
Absolutely. Many sailors bring family members or friends along as crew. Racing can be a great way to introduce others to sailing.
The easiest way to get started is simply to contact our Sail Chairman or come down to the docks on a race night and talk with other racers.
