Many sailors who keep their boats at Waukegan Marina have watched sailboats heading out for a race and wondered what it would be like to participate. The truth is that sailboat racing is one of the most enjoyable and rewarding ways to experience sailing, and it is far more accessible than many people think.
At Anchorage Yacht Club, our racing program is designed to be welcoming, fun, and accessible to sailors of all experience levels — from seasoned racers to skippers who have never entered a race before.
Sailboat racing is one of the fastest ways to improve your sailing skills. When you race, you naturally become more aware of wind shifts, sail trim, boat handling, and strategy. Many sailors find that after just a few races, their overall sailing ability improves dramatically.
While cruising is relaxing, racing adds an extra layer of excitement to being on the water. The friendly competition, the challenge of sailing your boat as efficiently as possible, and the shared experience with other sailors make racing incredibly enjoyable.
One of the most common misconceptions about racing is that you need a specialized race boat. In reality, most cruising sailboats at Waukegan Marina are perfectly capable of participating in Anchorage Yacht Club races.
Our races use the PHRF handicap system, which allows different types of sailboats to compete fairly against each other. Boats are grouped into divisions based on their performance, so you will be racing against boats similar to your own.
You do not need previous racing experience to participate. Many of our members started racing simply by giving it a try for the first time. Our experienced racers are always happy to help newcomers learn the basics, from starting procedures to simple racing strategies.
Racing is also one of the best ways to become part of the sailing community at Waukegan Marina. You’ll meet other boat owners, share stories and experiences on the water, and quickly become part of a group that shares your love of sailing.
Some sailors enjoy racing very competitively, while others participate simply because it is a fun way to spend time sailing with friends. Our program welcomes both approaches. You can race seriously, or simply enjoy the experience and learn along the way.
At the end of each season, Anchorage Yacht Club hosts an Annual Awards Banquet where results are announced and awards are presented. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the sailing season and the friendships formed on the water.
If you keep a sailboat at Waukegan Marina, we invite you to join us and experience sailboat racing for yourself. You may discover that it becomes one of the most enjoyable parts of your sailing season.
